Overview
Phrae is a heritage town in northern Thailand known for its teak-trade history and walkable old town, reached by direct bus from Bangkok or by train to nearby Den Chai station with an onward local transfer.
The old town, ringed by earthen ramparts and a moat, is small enough to circle on foot in about an hour; the train only reaches nearby Den Chai station, so the direct bus from Bangkok is the more straightforward option if avoiding an onward transfer.

What it's like
Old town or pilgrimage temple
Phrae's old town, ringed by earthen ramparts and a moat, is compact and traffic-free enough to circle on foot in about an hour. Wat Phra That Cho Hae, about 9km east of town, is the province's most revered pilgrimage site, with a 33-metre gilded chedi built in the Sukhothai era.
Things to do
- Teak mansions — Khum Chao Luang, free to enter, was the residence of Phrae's last ruling lord. Wongburi (Vongburi) House is a two-storey teak mansion turned museum, open 09:00-17:00 for a small fee.
