Overview

Nan is a heritage town in a remote valley of northern Thailand known for its murals and mountain day trips, reached by flight from Bangkok Don Mueang to Nan Nakhon Airport or by overnight bus from Bangkok's Mo Chit 2 terminal.

Good to know

The flight from Bangkok Don Mueang takes about 1 hour 10-20 minutes; the overnight bus from Mo Chit 2 takes 10-13 hours — public transport between mountain villages like Pua and Bo Kluea is slow, so a rented vehicle matters more here than in cities.

What it's like

Things to do

  • Old-town temples — Wat Phumin is known for its cruciform ordination hall and interior murals, founded in the late 16th century. Wat Phra That Chang Kham is a royal temple from 1406 whose chedi base is ringed by 24 elephant figures.
  • Mountain day trips — Route 1256 climbs a paved but winding 24-25km from Pua to Doi Phu Kha National Park. The Bo Kluea salt wells are a working village where families have drawn and boiled brine for centuries.
  • Overnight viewpoints — Doi Samer Dao in Sri Nan National Park has a ridge-top clearing for camping. Viewpoint 1715 on Route 1256 toward Doi Phu Kha is the area's most popular sunrise sea-of-mist spot, with its own car park and camping area.

Getting there & around

Getting there

Nok Air and Thai AirAsia fly from Bangkok Don Mueang (occasionally Suvarnabhumi) to Nan Nakhon Airport in about 1 hour 10-20 minutes. Overnight buses run from Bangkok's Mo Chit 2 terminal to Nan Bus Terminal, taking 10-13 hours.

Getting around

Between Pua and Bo Kluea, a local bus/songthaew service is slow on the winding mountain roads. A self-drive or rented vehicle lets travelers go at their own pace, which matters more when public services are sparse.

How Nan fits your trip

May suit travelers who want a remote, less-touristed northern valley town with old-town murals, a working salt-well village, and mountain viewpoints reached by a self-drive or slow local transport.
