What it's like
Things to do
- In-town temples — Wat Chong Klang sits on the shore of Nong Chong Kham Lake with its chedi reflected in the water. Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu occupies a wooded hilltop with wide valley views.
- Day trips — Pang Ung lake and the Yunnan tea village of Ban Rak Thai form one nature/village circuit. The Kayan (Long Neck) Karen community at Ban Huay Sua Tao is a separate visit — it is described as a refugee-camp community rather than an open village.

Getting there & around
Getting there
From Chiang Mai, Route 108 via Mae Sariang (349km) is the easier drive; Route 1095 via Pai (236km) is more scenic but has 1,864 curves. Local buses and minivans both run from Chiang Mai's Arcade Bus Terminal — the bus is slower and better for motion sickness, the minivan more frequent but faster through the curves.
Getting around
Doi Kong Mu's hilltop temple is a 5-10 minute drive by songthaew, tuk-tuk, or taxi from town, or a 20-30 minute steep walk up a stairway from Wat Phra Non.
