Overview

Koh Chang is reached by ferry from the Trat mainland (or a short flight to Trat Airport) with a developed west-coast beach strip and a largely undeveloped east coast.

Good to know

The only public transport is a shared songtaew network with pier-favoring fares; a rented scooter gives more freedom but crosses some genuinely steep, hairpin sections.

Where to stay

White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao)

The busiest, most developed beach, with the highest concentration of hotels, restaurants, and nightlife.

May suit travelers who want the most walkable concentration of restaurants, bars, and tour operators and don't mind the busiest strip on the island.

Klong Prao

The island's longest beach, split by two river mouths, with the biggest cluster of larger resorts and a quieter, less party-driven feel.

Shallower water and wider resort spacing are often associated with family stays here, compared with the busier White Sand Beach strip.

Lonely Beach (Hat Tha Nam)

The island's original, still-concentrated backpacker and party base, with dorm beds and budget rooms well below the island's resort-tier pricing.

May suit travelers prioritizing a concentrated budget base over the resort-tier pricing found elsewhere on the island.

Kai Bae

A tide-dependent central stretch with a well-known viewpoint over offshore islets, reached via the steep, switchback hill described in Getting around on the road onward to Lonely Beach.

Travelers who prioritize that viewpoint and are willing to plan swimming around the tide may prefer it here.

Bang Bao

A working fishing pier rebuilt on stilts, now the island's dive- and snorkel-trip hub, with its own accommodation tier.

May suit travelers prioritizing proximity to dive and snorkel-trip departures over beach-strip amenities.

East coast (Salak Kok, Dan Mai, Long Beach)

Almost no tourist infrastructure.

Suited only to travelers arranging their own transport who want near-total seclusion.

When to go

November–April is the dry season, with calmer seas and fuller restaurant/operator availability. May–October is the low season — cheaper but with rougher seas under the southwest monsoon, and many beachfront bars, restaurants, and bungalows reduce hours or close, with rainfall typically peaking around September.

Getting there & around

Getting there

Two mainland-to-island paths exist: fly Bangkok Airways to Trat Airport (TDX) and take a ground transfer, or take the Ao Thammachat Pier vehicle ferry to Ao Sapparot on the island — the practical tradeoff is speed-and-cost versus an overland/ferry combination that depends on beating the last boat of the day.

Getting around

Once on the island, the only public transport is a shared songtaew (pick-up truck) network — there are no metered taxis, tuk-tuks, or motorbike taxis — with a pier-favoring fare structure. A rented scooter gives more freedom but crosses some genuinely steep, hairpin sections, including a stretch between Kai Bae and Lonely Beach that reference sources describe as the island's most hazardous.

How Koh Chang fits your trip

May suit island stays where the area matters as much as the island — a long, resort-heavy family beach (Klong Prao), a walkable first-visit strip (White Sand Beach), or a concentrated budget base (Lonely Beach) feel like genuinely different trips.

Dates, other stops, and what matters on this trip can make this fit clearer.
