What it's like

Festival timing

The Hae Pha Khuen That cloth-wrapping festival at Phra Borom That Chedi is held twice a year, around Makha Bucha Day in February and Wisakha Bucha Day in May. The province's largest ancestor merit-making event, the Festival of the Tenth Lunar Month, runs from the 1st to the 15th waning-moon night every September.

Things to do

  • Day trips — Kiriwong Village is a cool, city-escape mountain-foothill town said to have some of the cleanest air in Thailand, visited as a day trip or overnight stay for nature — a day trip covers the essentials, but one night in a homestay captures more of the village's character, and summiting Khao Luang, southern Thailand's highest peak, needs two to three extra days on a guided trek. Khanom Town, further up the coast, is a smaller beach town known for lesser-known, untamed beaches including Khanom and Na Dan.
