Overview

Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) is a major Isaan city and rail junction in north-eastern Thailand, reached by frequent bus from Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal or by train from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong station.

Good to know

Buses leave Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal frequently enough that no advance timetable is normally needed; the train from Hua Lamphong typically takes four to six hours depending on train type — confirm current departures close to travel.

Where to stay

Moated old city / Yamo & Ratchadamnoen core

Budget hotels cluster near the Thao Suranaree (Yamo) monument and Pho Klang market inside the moated historic centre, within walking distance of markets and night bazaars.

Suits travelers without a car who want walking access to Yamo, Mae Kim Heng Market, night bazaars, and moat-grid sights.

Mittraphap (Hwy 2) mall & intercity-bus belt

Hotels here sit a couple of kilometres west of the city centre next to Highway 2, close to the mall, Tesco Lotus, and the main intercity bus station, with songthaews linking back to the old city.

Suits self-drivers and highway/bus-first itineraries who stay west of centre near The Mall, Lotus, or the newer bus station and use songthaews or taxis back to Yamo.

What it's like

Which train station

Chira Rd Junction Station is more centrally located, just south of the old city, and only a couple of baht extra on a Bangkok ticket to use instead of the main station about 2km from the center.

Things to do

  • City-core landmarks — The Thao Suranaree Monument, unveiled in 1934 to commemorate Khun Ying Mo, stands at the old west gate with free, round-the-clock entry. Chumphon Gate, part of the old moat-and-wall city, remains in its most original state, built from sandstone and laterite taken from a Khmer sanctuary King Narai had dismantled.
