Overview

Chiang Khan is a riverside heritage town on the Mekong in north-eastern Thailand, reached by direct overnight bus from Bangkok's Mo Chit 2 terminal or by flying to Loei Airport with an onward road transfer.

Good to know

Most guesthouses cluster along Chai Khong Road and the riverside Walking Street — quieter rooms slightly off the strip are still the same practical base, not a second area.

What it's like

Where to stay

Governed sources describe dozens of hotels and guesthouses along Chai Khong Road and the Mekong riverside Walking Street corridor — the practical overnight base for this town. Quieter rooms slightly off the street are still within the same corridor, not a separate base area; Phu Thok and Kaeng Khut Khu remain day-trip or excursion geometry from town.

Things to do

  • Riverside landmarks — Kaeng Khut Khu is a stretch of Mekong rapids about 5km outside town with market food and boat access. Phu Thok, a small mountain 6km away, is known for a sea-of-mist view over the Mekong valley at dawn.

Getting there & around

Getting there

Direct overnight buses run from Bangkok's Chatuchak/Mo Chit 2 terminal, mostly departing in the late afternoon or evening. Flying from Bangkok Don Mueang to Loei Airport (50km away) with an onward minivan, bus, or car transfer is a faster but costlier alternative.

Getting around

A tuk-tuk to Kaeng Khut Khu costs roughly 50-80 baht one-way with no effort required. The old town and outlying river sights can also be reached on foot, by rented bicycle, or by songthaew and motorbike taxi along Route 211.

How Chiang Khan fits your trip

May suit travelers wanting a slow Mekong riverside town with a walkable heritage strip, choosing bus versus flight-plus-transfer arrival and planning Kaeng Khut Khu or Phu Thok as outings from one Chai Khong / Walking Street lodging corridor.
