Overview

Buri Ram is a north-eastern Thailand province spanning Buriram City, the Phanom Rung and Prasat Muang Tam Khmer sanctuaries, and Chang Arena motorsport weekends — reached by train through the province or by flight to Buriram (BFV) from Bangkok Don Mueang.

Good to knowTiming matters

Phanom Rung's April solar-alignment window draws the largest crowds; quieter weekday mornings outside the alignment months are the calmer alternative — confirm current festival dates before you travel.

Where to stay

Nang Rong (Phanom Rung gateway)

The nearest town to Phanom Rung, roughly 25 minutes away by road, and the most convenient base for early-morning temple visits.

Suits early risers and budget travelers who want the shortest commute to Phanom Rung and are fine with a smaller town's services.

Buriram City (provincial hub)

The larger city with more restaurants, nightlife, and transport links; Phanom Rung is commonly visited as a longer day trip (roughly 1.5 hours by car or bus).

Suits travelers who want city comforts and Chang Arena / motorsport-weekend access and accept a longer Phanom Rung commute.

What it's like

Things to do

  • Khmer heritage — Phanom Rung Historical Park is the province's headline Khmer sanctuary on an extinct volcano; Prasat Muang Tam, ringed by L-shaped ponds, pairs easily as a nearby second site on the same southern loop.
  • City and sport anchors — Khao Kradong Forest Park is an in-town extinct volcano with a naga staircase viewpoint. Chang Arena and the adjacent Chang International Circuit draw football and motorsport visitors on event weekends.

When to go

Phanom Rung's April solar-alignment window (often quoted around the 3rd–5th) draws the largest crowds and a festival atmosphere; a quiet weekday morning outside the March, April, September, and October alignment dates is the calmer alternative for temple visits.

Getting there & around

Getting there

Rapid, express, and ordinary trains on the Bangkok–Ubon Ratchathani, Bangkok–Surin, and Korat–Ubon lines run through Buriram province. Thai AirAsia also flies to Buriram (BFV) from Bangkok Don Mueang as a faster alternative to the rail approach.

Getting around

Phanom Rung and Prasat Muang Tam sit in the province's south-east; Nang Rong is the usual staging town, while Buriram City is the larger hub with more restaurants and intercity transport links.
