Where to stay

Mae Nam, Bophut, Chaweng, Lamai, Choeng Mon and Taling Ngam are all realistic places to base a Samui stay. Not every useful difference can be compared across all six.

Within any of these areas, exactly where you stay changes the experience.

Areas at a glance

Start with the character and location of each area.

Mae Nam

North-coast beach area. Compared with central Chaweng, evenings are generally quieter and the layout more spread out.

Fisherman’s Village is within Bophut, not a separate stay area.

Chaweng

Main east-coast beach strip with a dense mix of places to stay, eat and go out. Some pockets away from the busiest central strip can feel quieter.

Lamai

Major east-side beach area with a generally calmer evening pattern than central Chaweng.

Generally farther from the airport than Chaweng or Bophut.

Choeng Mon

Northeast resort-bay area, generally quieter than the Chaweng and Lamai stay areas.

Compared with Lamai, amenity range is narrower.

Taling Ngam

Southwest hillside area known for sunset views and a slower, more private pace than the island’s main nightlife areas.
