Getting around in Koh Samui

Getting to Samui

Common patterns: fly into Samui, or connect via mainland gateways and a final road/ferry leg. For many international itineraries the Samui last leg is less direct than Phuket—budget time (and often cost) for that connection, and confirm schedules closer to travel.

Samui airport vs Phuket access

Choose this when you want to land on the island and skip a ferry day, and you can accept that many international routes need an extra connection compared with Phuket.

Good to know Time and cost of the last leg often shape the trip more than map distance suggests—confirm connections closer to travel.

Mainland gateway + ferry

Choose this when Samui flights do not fit the itinerary, or you are already routing through Surat Thani / mainland piers for cost or schedule reasons.

Good to know Treat the road and ferry as a full travel segment with sea-condition buffer, not a short errand after landing.

Airport-to-area transfer

Choose this when you have already chosen a coast—north, northeast, east strip, or southeast—and want a clear first transfer rather than improvising on arrival.

Good to know Transfer time and price vary by area; quieter coasts are often farther from the densest service strip.

Getting around once you are there

Day-to-day movement commonly relies on taxis or arranged transfers. Stay area strongly affects how often you need them: walkable village pockets differ from spread-out villa coasts. Scooter use is common locally but is a risk decision, not a default recommendation.

Transport by coast

Choose this when evenings and dinners matter: walkable village pockets need fewer rides than spread-out villa stretches.

Good to know Area choice usually decides taxi frequency more than the hotel brand does.

When a second island is optional

Choose this when beach recovery, kids’ routines, or a short stay leave little room for a ferry day to Phangan or Tao.

Good to know Keep a second island optional until the ferry day clearly pays off; same-day errands from Samui rarely work well.

Worth confirming

Good to know Samui uses more than one ferry pier depending on the operator and route. Confirm the pier on your ticket — it may not match the landmark nearest your hotel.

Good to know How far you walk to dinner depends on the area — and on exactly where you stay. This is not an area-wide walkability guarantee.
